Let’s continue with another post about musical heritage in Russia.
Kazan is included in UNESCO Creative Cities Network for Music (2019)!
Situated in the west part of the country, Kazan is a city with long musical traditions, as well as the birthplace of many famous composers and performers.
Every year, the city hosts numerous international festivals, including the Opera Festival named after Feodor Chaliapin. This international musical event attracts singers and opera-lovers from all over the world, providing a global stage for both local and national opera singers.
In addition, Rudolf Nureyev International Classic Ballet Festival is another important event promoting synergies between dance and music.
As a Creative City of Music, and in compliance with the common objective towards which the Network works -making creativity a lever for urban development and conceiving new solutions to tackle common challenges-, Kazan envisages involving residents and tourists into the musical cultural life, organizing cultural & educational projects for the youth, hosting the International Festival of Young Composers, and implementing both projects and events so as to attract participants and partners coming from other Creative Cities.

- In this year, music-lovers worldwide celebrate also the 150th birth anniversary (1873-2023) of Rachmaninoff’s good friend Feodor Chaliapin. The famous Russian opera and chamber singer was born in Kazan and the anniversary is included on UNESCO List of Commemorations and Anniversaries for 2023.
- The Historic and Architectural Complex of the Kazan Kremlin, and the Astronomical Observatories of Kazan Federal University are inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage List of cultural sites since 2000 and 2023, respectively.
