Blast from the Past – Republic of Azerbaijan
The first post of the day is a “Blast from the Past”!
This infographic includes cultural highlights from Azerbaijan. In particular:
Literature
- Nizami Museum of Azerbaijani Literature, named after Nizami Ganjavi, considered Azerbaijan’s greatest romantic epic poet.
- Sakina Akhundzadeh, the first known female and feminist playwright and dramatist in Azerbaijani literature.
Music
- Mugham music, a traditional musical form characterised by a large degree of improvisation. It is included in UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Museum
- National Carpet Museum, the first museum of its kind in the world.
- National Art Museum, with more than 18,000 exhibits.
Natural/Cultural Monuments
- Shirvanshah Palace (inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage List of cultural sites) and Qabala/Gabala District, sites with a rich cultural and natural heritage.
Gastronomy
- Shekerbura and Shah Pilaf, traditional must-try dishes.
- Culture of Çay (tea), inscribed on UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Art
- Miniature Art, a type of two-dimensional artwork that involves the design and creation of small paintings. It is inscribed on UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Customs and Traditions
- Nar Bayrami, traditional pomegranate festivity and culture. It is inscribed on UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
- Traditional art and symbolism of Kelaghayi, making and wearing women’s silk headscarves. It is inscribed on UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Architecture
- Sheki Khan’s Palace, the most important 18th-century structure in Azerbaijan. It is included in UNESCO World Heritage List of cultural sites.
UNESCO Creative Cities
- Sheki, UNESCO Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art.
- Baku, UNESCO Creative City of Design.
Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe
- Prehistoric Rock Art Trails. Azerbaijan has joined this Cultural Route with the Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape, which includes a collection of more than 6,000 rock engravings testifying to 40,000 years of rock art. It is included in UNESCO World Heritage List of cultural sites.
