Blast from the Past – Republic of Bulgaria
Let’s start the day with our “Blast from the Past”!
This infographic includes cultural highlights from Bulgaria. In particular:
Literature
- Georgi Gospodinov, one of the most famous contemporary Bulgarian writers.
- The Legend of the Black Sea by Sergey Nikolov, a short story for children about the Black Sea.
Music
- Bistritsa Babi, a group of elderly women who perform the traditional dances and polyphonic songs of the Shoplouk region of Bulgaria. The group is included in UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Museum
- National History Museum, one of the largest history museums in the wider region with over 650,000 exhibits.
Natural/Cultural Monuments
- Ancient City of Nessebar, Madara Rider (both inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage List of cultural sites), and Devetashka Cave, sites of rich cultural and natural heritage.
Gastronomy
- Tarator, Shkembe Soup, Banitsa with cheese, traditional must-try dishes.
Painting
- Vladimir Dimitrov – Maystora (The Master), one of the most talented and famous Bulgarian painters of the 20th
Theatre
- Gergana Dimitrova, award-winning theatre director, playwright and translator, representing the new wave of Bulgarian theatre.
Sculpture
- Vaska Emanouilova, the first woman artist to leave a lasting mark on the Bulgarian sculpture society.
- Art
- Christo Vladimirov Javacheff, contemporary artist known for his large-scale environmental artworks. He created these site-specific art installations with his partner and wife Jeanne-Claude Denat.
Customs and Traditions & Photography
- “Crafted by Hand. Photo Diary”, a project about masters of very rare and highly skilled crafts, practised by no more than ten craftworkers.
European Capital of Culture
- Plovdiv, 2019 European Capital of Culture.
UNESCO Creative Cities
- Gabrovo, UNESCO Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art.
Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe
- Women Writers Route. Bulgaria has joined this Cultural Route with Elisaveta Bagryana, one of the “first ladies of Bulgarian women’s literature”, nominated three times for the Nobel Prize.
