Theatre – Ukraine
What is the theatre play that has become a present-day cultural phenomenon in Ukraine?
Based on the 1833 novel of the same name by Ukrainian writer Hryhorii Kvitka-Osnovyanenko, "The Witch of Konotop" was premiered at the Ivan Franko National Academic Drama Theater in Kyiv. Since then, it has attracted thousands of viewers across the country, as it combines traditional values with modern theatrical forms.
Directed by Ivan Uryvskyi, the story embodies the flavour of Ukrainian folklore, satire and mysticism, demonstrating the versatility of the Ukrainian literary heritage. The production is also notable for its modern take on the classic text, reviving it and expanding its boundaries for contemporary audiences.
The direction and acting masterfully employ unexpected stage solutions, rich symbolism and skillful play of light and shadow, which infuse the plot with a special mystical atmosphere.
As for the music, the use of authentic Ukrainian melodies and ritual songs transports the audience into the world of folk beliefs. As a result, the performance recreates the mood and spirit of that era, which is still an important part of Ukrainians' cultural identity. The music and soundtrack emphasise the characters and help to understand their motivations and inner world.
Bonus Trivia!
