Joint PhD Summer School 2025
“Global Challenges and Local Responses”
1 - 4 September 2025 | Athens, Greece
The European Urban Research Association (EURA) and the Standing Group on Local Government & Politics of the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR), in collaboration with the International Centre for Black Sea Studies (ICBSS), are organising a joint PhD Summer School to be held at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece, on 1-4 September 2025.
Topic & Objectives:
The Summer School aims to provide an opportunity for doctoral students to present and discuss their work on local policies aimed at mitigating and/or solving global challenges such as climate change, migration, social inequalities, provision affordable housing, and urban tourism. Contributions that demonstrate specific local responses to global challenges through comparisons within or between countries are particularly welcome.
As comparisons of local policies are the focus of the Summer School, students will receive methodological guidance from experienced researchers, and advice from a journal editor on how to write an academic article and submit it successfully to an internationally renowned journal.
Application Process:
Interested PhD students must submit an abstract (up to 300 words) of the paper to be presented at the Summer School and discussed by the participants by 31 March 2025.
The subject of the paper must be related to the topic of the Summer School.
♦ Submission by email ♦
The abstract, together with the details of the supervisors of the doctoral thesis, should be sent by e-mail to the following:
- Björn Egner (bjoern.egner[at]tu-darmstadt.de)
- Hubert Heinelt (hubert.heinelt[at]tu-darmstadt.de)
- Nikos Hlepas (nhlepas[at]gmail.com)
The organisers will select the papers to be presented at the Summer School by the end of April 2025.
Written versions of the selected papers must be submitted by email to the Summer School organisers by the end of July 2025 at the latest.
All submitted papers will be made available to participants electronically at the beginning of August 2025.
