Blast from the Past!
This infographic includes cultural highlights from Greece. In particular:
Literature
- Giorgos Seferis, poet and diplomat, the first Greek to win the Nobel Prize in Literature (1963) and one of the greatest poets of the 20th
Music
- Mikis Theodorakis, award-winning composer, lyricist and public figure, considered one of the world's most important composers.
- Megaron - The Athens Concert Hall, a cultural centre inspired by the great lied singer Alexandra Trianti.
Cinema
- Yorgos Lanthimos, award-winning director, including a BAFTA Award and nominated for five Academy Awards as well as a Golden Globe.
- Thessaloniki International Film Festival, one of the oldest and most important film festivals in Southeast Europe.
Museum
- Museum of Byzantine Culture, the building of which is considered one of the best works of public architecture created in Greece in recent decades.
- Bath House of the Winds, the only surviving public bath in Athens today.
Natural/Cultural Monuments
- Island of Delos, Ancient Olympia, Monastery of Daphni (all inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage List of cultural sites) and City of Nicopolis, sites with a rich cultural heritage.
- Shipwreck of Peristera, the first underwater museum in the country.
Gastronomy
- Melomakarona and Kourabiedes, traditional festive
Painting
- “Treasures of Philhellenic Art” Exhibition, a collection of paintings by famous European artists of the 19th century, representing the whole range of the Philhellenic repertoire.
Theatre
- National Theatre of Northern Greece, a cultural centre which, among other activities, supports schools in their role as spaces of democracy and equality.
Sculpture
- Tinian Marble Craftsmanship, a long-standing tradition that expresses the cultural identity of the island of Tinos. It is included in UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Documentary
- “Seleucus I Nikator. From Europos to the Hellenistic World” and “The City of the Morrylians”, documentaries about the region of Kilkis, both winners of the Museums in Short Awards.
European Capital of Culture
- Elefsina, 2023 European Capital of Culture.
Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe
- Routes of the Olive Tree. Greece has joined this Cultural Route with itineraries within territories with rich olive-oil production heritage. This heritage includes the Mediterranean Diet, a whole mentality about sharing and consuming food. It is included in UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
