Blast from the Past!
This infographic includes cultural highlights from the Republic of North Macedonia. In particular:
Music
- Kopachkata, a dynamic and energetic social dance performed by local residents of the village of Dramche in the region of Pijanec. The dance is included in UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Cinema
- “North Pole” and “Only the Devil Hates Water”, two short films awarded at the “Balkans Beyond Borders Short Film Festival” in 2021 and 2023, respectively.
Natural/Cultural Monuments
- Ohrid region (inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage List of mixed sites), Golem Grad and Sveti Naum Monastery, sites with a rich cultural and natural heritage.
- Dlaboka Reka, a primeval beech forest characterised by natural processes with almost no human intervention in the last 100 years. It is part of the Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe, inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage List of natural sites. This is currently the largest serial World Heritage site.
Gastronomy
- Pastrmajlija and Maznik, traditional must-try dishes.
Customs and Traditions
- Spring Celebration “Hidrellez”, recognised as Spring Day or the awakening of nature, held annually on 6 May. The tradition is included in UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
