Blast from the Past!
This infographic includes cultural highlights from Romania. In particular:
Literature
- Mihai Eminescu, poet, novelist and journalist, considered the most famous and influential Romanian poet.
- Mircea Cartarescu, poet, novelist, literary critic, journalist and one of the most translated Romanian authors.
Music
- Doina, a lyrical, solemn chant that is improvised and spontaneous. It is included in UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
- Maria Tănase, singer, known for performing both traditional Romanian folk songs and modern pop music.
Cinema
- Cristi Puiu, award-winning film director and screenwriter.
Museum
- Cotroceni National Museum, located in the Cotroceni Palace, the only Romanian residence that has been continuously inhabited since the late 17th
- Timișoara National Museum of Art, with collections of European Fine Arts, Banat Icons and Paintings, Decorative Art and Romanian Modern Art.
Natural/Cultural Monuments
- Historic Centre of Sighișoara (inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage List of cultural sites), Peleș Castle and Berca Mud Volcanoes, sites of rich cultural and natural heritage.
Gastronomy
- Covrigi, Papanasi, Gogoși and Amandine, traditional must-try dishes.
Theatre
- Eugène Ionesco, one of the most important and influential playwrights of the 20th century, contributed to the beginnings of what is known as the Theatre of the Absurd.
Sculpture
- Constantin Brâncusi, one of the most important sculptors of the 20th century and a founding figure of modernism.
Customs and Traditions
- Mosoii and Oleleul, old and festive customs related to the winter holidays.
- Art of the traditional blouse with embroidery on the shoulder-“Altiță”, an essential part of the folk dress tradition, included in UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
European Capital of Culture
- Timișoara, 2023 European Capital of Culture.
Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe
- Romania has joined this Cultural Route with the Roman-Catholic Cathedral of Saint Michael in the heart of Transylvania, Alba Iulia. A great example of late Romanesque architecture, it is also the oldest and longest cathedral in the country.
