Blast from the Past!
This infographic includes cultural highlights from Türkiye. In particular:
Literature
- Elif Shafak, award-winning novelist and essayist, the most widely read female writer in Türkiye.
Music
- Saz, the country's most famous plucked instrument.
- Kudüm, Turkish percussion instrument.
- Turkish State Choir, the country's leading professional choral ensemble, which performs both as a symphonic choir and as an a cappella ensemble.
Museum
- Anatolian Civilizations Museum, which houses unique works of art from Anatolia since the Paleolithic Age.
- Gökyay Foundation Chess Museum, which houses the collection of Akın Gökyay, the largest collection of chess sets and the first and only one of its kind to enter the Guinness Book of World Records.
Natural/Cultural Monuments
- Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia, and Hierapolis-Pamukkale (both inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage List of mixed sites), sites of rich natural and cultural heritage.
Gastronomy
- Kabak Tatlısı and Ekmek kadayıfı, traditional must-try dishes.
Painting
- Müfide Kadri, the first known Turkish woman painter and painting teacher, and the first Turkish woman artist to receive an award.
Theatre
- Istanbul Theatre Festival, a festival with which the Avignon Festival and the Athens Epidaurus Festival formed Kadmos, the European Network of Mediterranean Festivals.
- Trabzon International Black Sea Theatre Festival, a non-competitive festival that aims to be a bridge between Western and Eastern cultures.
Pottery
- Traditional craftsmanship of Çini-making, the tradition of making handmade glazed tiles and ceramics, included in UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Art
- Hüsn-i Hat (Art of Hat), traditional calligraphy in Islamic art, included in UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Board Game
- Traditional intelligence and strategy Game: Mangala/Göçürme, a game that can be played on special or improvised boards. It is included in UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
UNESCO Creative Cities
- Afyonkarahisar, UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy.
