Blast from the Past – Ukraine
This infographic includes cultural highlights from Ukraine. In particular:
Literature
- Lesia Ukrainka, poet and playwright, one of the most famous figures in Ukrainian literature and a leader of its modernist movement.
Music
- Bandura, stringed instrument and national musical instrument of Ukraine.
- DakhaBrakha, a famous folk music quartet combining contemporary rhythms with sound and soul elements.
- Solomiya Krushelnytska, soprano and one of the world's greatest singers of the first half of the 20th She was the first opera singer to dare to sing the new version of Madama Butterfly after its failure, making it one of the most successful operas in the world.
- Shchedryk (Carol of the Bells), a melody that was originally a winter folk song. Later, with English lyrics, it became a Christmas symbol and the soundtrack of hundreds of films and TV shows, including the international blockbuster “Home Alone”.
Natural/Cultural Monuments
- Wooden Tserkvas of the Carpathian Region in Poland and Ukraine, Lviv – the Ensemble of the Historic Centre (both inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage List of cultural sites) and National Kyiv-Pechersk Historical and Cultural Preserve, sites of rich cultural heritage.
Gastronomy
- Borscht, Kutia and Pampushka, traditional must-try dishes.
Painting
- Ivan Trush, impressionist painter, master of landscapes and portraits.
Customs and Traditions
- Vyshyvanka, traditional Ukrainian clothing with embroidery on the neck, cuffs and hem.
- Hutnytstvo, Ukrainian blown glass art, one of the oldest folk arts in the country.
- Pysanka, Ukrainian tradition of making Easter decorated eggs, one of the oldest and most widespread forms of folk decorative and applied art.
- “White on White” technique of embroidery of Reshetylivka, a recognisable style of embroidery and lacing with white threads of white canvas.
Architecture
- Saint-Sophia Cathedral, the oldest fully preserved Christian church in the East Slavic area, with the largest preserved collection of mosaics and frescoes of the period. The Cathedral is inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage List of cultural sites.
- Chernihiv Churches, outstanding examples of the Byzantine architecture.
UNESCO Creative Cities
- Lviv, UNESCO Creative City of Literature.
Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe
- European Route of Ceramics. Ukraine has joined this Cultural Route with the Tradition of Kosiv Painted Ceramics, including dishes, ceremonial items, toys and tiles. This tradition is inscribed on UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
