9th BSEC Month of Culture
1-30 November 2025
Gastronomy – Republic of Bulgaria
The 9th Edition of the BSEC Month of Culture has just been launched!
We embark on our month-long cultural journey, dedicating the first post to Bulgaria, host country of the BSEC Chairmanship-in-Office for the second semester 2025.
So, let’s start with Kozunak (Kozunak), a delicious and yeasted traditional sweet bread.
Kozunak (or cozonac for the Romanian version) is traditionally made for festive occasions. In Bulgaria, it is traditionally prepared for Easter, while in Romania, it is prepared for both Easter and Christmas.
Although it looks like a loaf of bread, kozunak is actually a cake that is flavoured with lemon or orange. It is usually made with flour, sugar, milk, cocoa, eggs, nuts and sometimes raisins. The cake is commonly shaped as a braided coil and baked in a round baking pan. Once the kozunak has been taken out of the oven, it has to cool a little before being sprinkled with granulated sugar.
Serving Suggestion!
Although it smells wonderful when it comes out of the oven, kozunak is traditionally served at room temperature.
Enjoy it with a cup of warm drink, such as coffee, tea or milk!
