7th BSEC Month of Culture
1-30 November 2023
Museum - Romania
Between 1880 and 1914, Timișoara was the most important industrial, commercial, financial and cultural city in the region, admired for its artistic excellence in music, literature, painting, sculpture and architecture, as well as for its technical and scientific innovations.
Worth noting, it is Timișoara that hosted the first public library with a reading room in the Habsburg Empire and the first cinema screening.
Embracing all this cultural and artistic richness, the Timișoara National Museum of Art is hosted by the Baroque Palace as an independent institution, managing collections of European Fine Arts, Banat Icons & Paintings, Decorative and Romanian Modern Art, as well as Cornelius Baba’s works. In 2020, the institution received the national museum status, thus confirming the value of these collections.
The museum plays a central role in the Cultural Program Timișoara 2023 – European Capital of Culture by having organized -among other initiatives- the BAROQUE RELOADED project. This project proposed to explore the cultural heritage of Banat through innovative forms of contemporary art situated at the intersection between Baroque formal principles and new synesthetic artistic genres, mediated by technology (multimedia installations, site-specific interventions, participatory activities, etc.) capable of transforming the permanent collections and the Baroque architecture of the Palace into an empire of senses and experiences dedicated to an active viewer who interacts and immerses in an extended monumental show, integrated into the museum's curatorial itinerary.
