7th BSEC Month of Culture
1-30 November 2023
Timișoara is 2023 European Capital of Culture!
Timișoara, the capital of the historical province of Banat, is the cultural and economic centre of the western part of Romania. The city has long maintained its reputation as a cross-border, young and entrepreneurial center.
The city was built over an ancient Roman fortress, and the first documentary attestation dates back to the 12th century. Timișoara owns the largest ensemble of old buildings in Romania, while its varied architecture, the influences of the Viennese Baroque and the multitude of parks have earned Timișoara the reputation of "Little Vienna" and the "City of Parks".
Timișoara is also an important railway centre, while the Bega Canal is the oldest navigable channel on the current territory of Romania.
- In 1884, Timişoara became the 1st city in continental Europe with electric street lighting.
- The inventor of the first modern espresso machine, Francesco (Ferencz) Illy, was born in the Iosefin neighbourhood of Timișoara.
Under the theme ‘’Shine your light – Light up your city!’’, the artistic programme of this Capital of Culture is structured around people, places and connections, focusing on its diverse cultural palette.
Timișoara is the 2nd city in Romania to hold the ECoC title, after Sibiu in 2007.
Plan your visit & book your seat!
Are you in Timișoara? Then, do not hesitate to visit the following (free admission, until 7 November):
- ‘’Tree Nursery. 1306 Plants for Timișoara’’ is a temporary installation, housing a city nursery, seen as a test for new possibilities to use public space. Each platform offers a vantage point with unique perspectives on iconic buildings and spaces, as well as a place for multiple cultural activities. At the end of its lifespan, the nursery will put the structure, trees and plants back into circulation, respecting the logic of total reuse of resources.
- ‘’Soare cu dinți’’ is a theater performance dedicated to the deaf community; a nonverbal comedy show based on comedic mechanisms borrowed from pantomime, slapstick, clowning, as well as from sign language.
