Second Living Lab of the Source to Seas - Zero Pollution 2030 project
8 - 9 April 2025 | Varna, Bulgaria
On 8 - 9 April 2025, ICBSS Junior Project Manager, Ms. Elpida Besi, participated at the Second Living Lab workshop on “Exploring scenarios for reducing persistent chemicals in the Black Sea basin”, held in Varna, Bulgaria. The Living Lab was hosted by the Black Sea NGO Network in the context of the Source to Seas - Zero Pollution 2030 (SOS-ZEROPOL2030) project.
Based on the input provided by the 2024 Living Lab on “Designing strategies for better governance of persistent chemicals in the Black Sea basin”, this year’s focus was on prioritising policies that have the potential to raise awareness of the risks posed by PFAS in the Black Sea basin, identifying obstacles and best practices that influence the regional governance landscape.
In this context, participants took the opportunity to jointly discuss four scenarios for the reduction of PFAS (polyfluoroalkyl substances - also known as "forever chemicals") in the Black Sea Basin. By working through these scenarios (EU Compliance, EU Collaboration, Regional Leadership, Regional Autonomy), participants explored the preferred alternatives and assessed the consequences and possible trade-offs between the different alternatives.
The results of the two Living Labs will form part of the advice provided to the European Commission on reducing pollution in European seas within the SOS-ZEROPOL2030 project.
