This year, Armenians and music-lovers all around the world celebrate the 100^th jubilee of the famous composer and pianist Arno Babajanyan (or Arno Babajanian, Armenian: Առնո Բաբաջանյան). In addition, today is his death anniversary (November 11, 1983). So, we could not but dedicate this day of the 5^th BSEC Month of Culture to him.

Arno Babajanyan was born in Yerevan, Armenia. He graduated from the Yerevan and the Moscow Conservatories, and he taught at the first from 1950 to 1956. In 1952, he wrote the Piano Trio in F-sharp minor, which was regarded as a masterpiece. Afterwards, Babajanyan undertook concert tours throughout the Soviet Union and Europe, and in 1971 he was named a People’s Artist of the USSR. His creative personality was shown through the different musical genres (pop, jazz, classical) which he wrote in, including popular songs in collaboration with poets, such as Yevgeny Yevtushenko and Robert Rozhdestvensky. Arno Babajanyan composed music for dramatic performances (W. Saroyan’s “My heart’s in the highlands”) and movies (“The first love song”, co-author Gh. Saryan, “On the path of thunder”, “The mechanics of happiness”), while many of his works were influenced by Armenian folk music and folklore. Moreover, a minor planet, 9017 Babadzhanyan, was named after him.
