Cultural Routes-Women Writers Route

On the occasion of the UNESCO International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (25 November), today’s post will be dedicated to remarkable women who made a difference in culture.

First, let’s discover the Women Writers Route (2022), one of the 3 newly certified CoE Cultural Routes, highlighting life and creativity of women writers at the turn of the 19^th and 20^th century. These women’s life stories and literary works marked the struggle for human rights and prefigured gender equality as we know it today.

Bulgaria and Serbia are the BSEC countries which participate to this Cultural Route.

During the 20^th century, women started entering cultural, artistic and social life in greater numbers and their voices could no longer be ignored. The Route links symbolic and physical points of their lives and takes visitors to an exciting journey through real and imaginary spaces while discovering their lives, linguistic diversity and social struggle for equality.

Balancing between tangible and intangible heritage, the Women Writers Route links museums, memorial and reading rooms, public monuments, and other public spaces in six different countries and combines them with activities that put cultural literary and linguistic heritage in a new context. Furthermore, it thrives to increase the number of memorial places dedicated to overlooked or forgotten women writers, whose lifestyles have contributed to intercultural dialogue, while their literature celebrates freedom of expression.

As for the two BSEC countries, they are connected to the Route with:

- Elisaveta Bagryana (Bulgaria)

- Isidora Sekulić and Jelena Dimitrijević (Serbia)
