The Bulgarian pie, Banitsa with Cheese (Bulgarian: Баница със сирене), has been included in the World's 100 best emblematic national and regional dishes according to 100k+ ratings on TasteAtlas (tasteatlas AWARDS 2021) as the best pastry and breakfast worldwide.
Banitsa made with cheese is the main version of this traditional food. It is made by layering sheets of buttered phyllo pastry with a combination of eggs, yogurt, and cheese, such as sirene.
Traditionally, banitsa with cheese was prepared and served on Christmas and New Year's Eve, but nowadays it can also be bought throughout the year at grocery stores, street vendors and kiosks. Apart from this version, there are also other types of savory or sweet banitsa pies filled with various vegetables and fruits, respectively.
